Module Overview
About this Module
It is likely you will have days when you are caring for a person living with dementia where things have not gone as planned. When things don’t go as well as expected, the person you care for may have responded with severe behaviour – becoming distressed, angry or aggressive. This is upsetting for you and them. This short module looks at some things you can do to understand why a person responds with behaviour change and what you can do to prevent these situations happening again in the future. Please note: The example we'll explore involves Pam, a person living with dementia, and her daughter, Sarah. While this is a family care scenario, the strategies can be used in community care settings as well.Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, professional staff and family carers should be able to:
- Understand the signs that indicate a person’s emotional state is escalating.
- Understand potential triggers that may contribute to severe behaviours.
- Understand strategies to use to prevent situations from escalating.
