About this Module
This module deepens understanding of how past and ongoing trauma, including loss of land, language, and family, affects the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with dementia. It highlights protective cultural strengths, rights, and community-led ways of healing that promote dignity, autonomy, and belonging. Learners are encouraged to practise strengths-based, rights-focused, and trauma-aware care that restores connection and empowers both the person and their family.Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, staff should be able to:
- Recognise the role of family, kin and community in supporting a person living with dementia.
- Identify strengths-based and culturally safe approaches when engaging with the person and their family.
- Identify how life story, trauma, beliefs and connection to Country shape each person’s dementia journey.
- Recognise simple culturally appropriate changes that build on strengths and maintain connection to cultural identity and Country.
