Understanding and Reducing Antipsychotic Use in Dementia Care Workshop
In this workshop, build practical skills to support safe, person-centred antipsychotic deprescribing in dementia care using the Minimising Antipsychotic Use in Dementia Care (MAP) Guide.
Overview
About this Workshop
This 3-hour workshop provides a practical focus on supporting best-practice antipsychotic deprescribing in dementia care.
Participants will explore the risks and limitations of antipsychotic use in people living with dementia, including the importance of using the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time when non-medicine strategies have not been effective. The workshop also covers why regular review is essential, how mandatory reporting under the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards relates to antipsychotic use, and how antipsychotic audits and benchmarking can help assess performance and identify areas for improvement.
The workshop introduces the Minimising Antipsychotic Use in Dementia Care (MAP) Guide — a unique, practical checklist-style resource that brings together current best practice and guidelines into one person-centred guide. Through a case study, participants will explore how to apply the MAP Guide to support safer, more consistent, person-centred approaches to reviewing and reducing antipsychotic use in care settings.
