Delivering Falls Prevention Education

This topic helps you deliver tailored falls prevention education with the person living with dementia and/or their care partners.

Participants will learn a novel approach using rhyme and imagery to deliver safety messages addressing a range of common falls risk factors. Developed through research led by Dr Jacqueline Francis-Coad, the safety messages are an evidence-based, co-designed set of 20 posters, each pairing a common falls risk factor with a memorable rhyme, image and actions. 

Participants will then have the opportunity to practise applying these messages with a person living with dementia and their care partner.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

• Deliver falls education with the person living with dementia, and/or their care partners, to reduce their risk of falls
• Apply tailored safety messages to the person living with dementia’s lifestyle and environment

How to Prepare

1. Read the Facilitator Guide alongside the Interactive Training Tool, working through both together so you’re familiar with the flow, animations and interactive elements before running the session.
2. Download and print the safety message set for your chosen case study – community (John), residential aged care (Nina), or hospital (Syd) – so each group of three participants has one set of six messages to work with during the role play.
3. Download and share the full set of 20 safety message posters with your team after the session, so they can continue using them in their own practice. Combined posters are also available for display in residential aged care and hospital staff areas.
4. Make sure you can access this web page during your session so you can show the Interactive Training Tool below – on a laptop or tablet, a projector and screen, or a screen-sharing setup for virtual meetings.
