A Guide for those interested in setting up a community-based music group for people living with dementia and their carers.

Bournemouth University Dementia Institute (BUDI) has produced a free publication titled BUDI Orchestra Method: A Guide for those interested in setting up a community-based music group for people living with dementia and their carers.

The guide is based on learnings from the BUDI Orchestra project – a partnership between the university researchers and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The project involved people in the early stages of dementia joining the professional musicians to learn (or relearn) instruments, with positive results.

The researchers have produced this guide to “provide the ingredients, rather than the recipe, to create music groups that give pleasure, fun and a sense of accomplishment to all involved”.

It discusses: preparation (selecting a team, instruments, music selection); structure of rehearsals; performance (location and layout); and top 10 tips.
