This workshop will be useful to experienced RACF clinicians who are responsible for leading their staff in improving care of people living with dementia, specifically those experiencing responsive behaviours.

It is focused on helping you to:

  1. Identify issues that may be contributing to the provision of less than optimal resident care.
  2. Establish effective, sustainable systems to build staff capacity to recognise, assess, monitor, resolve or reduce issues that create and magnify resident discomfort.
  3. promote resident dignity and comfort and increase staff and family satisfaction.

The workshop assumes core knowledge of the principles of person centred care and responsive behaviours.

Professor Elizabeth Beattie & Dr Margaret MacAndrew

Professor Elizabeth Beattie PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN

Elizabeth Beattie, Professor of Aged and Dementia Care, School of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology, is a psychogeriatric nurse educated in Australia, the UK and the US who has been involved in dementia-focused clinical practice, education and research for 30 years. She is a Director of the Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration and Dementia Training Australia. Elizabeth has an international nursing leadership profile and a sustained record of competitive research funding and publication. Her research is focused on improving the quality of care and quality of life of people living with dementia and those who support them.

Dr Margaret MacAndrew PhD, RN

Dr Margaret MacAndrew is a lecturer in the School of Nursing at Queensland University of Technology. As an RN with experience in caring for people with dementia in long term care, she has an interest in improving quality of life for people with dementia and in particular people with dementia who wander. Over the past three years she has trialled two behavioural interventions that aimed to reduce risky aspects of wandering in in long term care and is currently developing a tool to reduce risk associated with wandering through accurate assessment and targeted care planning.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify characteristics of care environments that can impede the provision of optimal care regarding responsive behaviours
  • Plan actions  to improve how staff think about, decide, enact, review and monitor the care of residents experiencing responsive behaviours
  • Identify tools to record and measure the impact of your actions over a period of time
  • Identify ongoing learning needed to support your planned actions

To enrol in a course, you must first sign up for a DTA account.

Once you’re logged into your DTA Profile, you can enrol into a course.

  1. Browse the available courses
  2. Click the grey Register button
  3. Complete the requested fields e.g. Which of the following reasons best describe why you engaged with this DTA training option?
  4. Click button Request a Booking for this Course
  5. You will then receive an automated confirmation email and the course/s will show as pending in your DTA Profile.
  6. The day prior to your course start date, your registration will be approved, and an email sent to you containing the entry link to your course/s.

You can see  your course registrations in your DTA profile.

  1. Log in to your DTA Profile
  2. Check My Courses for listing of current, completed and pending courses

Note: Pending enrolments  – You will receive a link into the course, on the eve of the session start date

Certificates do not become available until the after the completion date of the course, and once DTA’s eLearning coordinator has reviewed the completed coursework.

If you finish the course before the end date, a completion link will be emailed to you (once the course has ended and been reviewed by our eLearning coordinator).

After this time, Certificate(s) will be available in your DTA Profile, and accessed/printed as needed.

You are welcome to take DTA courses if you live outside of Australia, however if learner quota is near full then preference will be given to Australian enrolments.

You will receive a link into the course, on the eve of the course start date.

There is no early access into courses.

If you’re having trouble logging into your DTA Profile, and are sure your username and password are correct, please try the following:

  1. Close your current browser window
  2. Open a new browser window and go to
    Note: Don’t use a cached version of the page from your ‘history’ or favourites
  3. Click the Log in button in top right corner of the website.
  4. Type your username and your password all the way to the end, or cut & paste from the email exactly, with no spaces. Don’t let your device autocomplete those fields.
